September Spice of the Month: Harissa

Harissa spice (also referred to as a “harissa spice blend,” “harissa seasoning,” or “harissa powder) is a spicy, aromatic seasoning made from a mixture of smoked chili peppers and other spices, such as cumin, coriander, caraway seeds and garlic powder.

This hot seasoning is native to Tunisia, though it has since spread to other areas in North Africa and the Middle East, including Algeria, Morocco and Egypt.  Because of its vast popularity, harissa has developed many uses.   It can be used as a dry rub or as a spice in various recipes, adding a spicy and earthy flavor to dishes like tacos, braised meats, curries, fish and vegetables.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 tablespoon harissa powder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (optional for extra flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 sweet potato, cut into cubes
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 zucchini, sliced
  • 1 red onion, cut into wedges
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. PREHEAT: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. MIX: In a small bowl, mix the harissa powder, olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper to form a paste.
  3. TOSS: In a large mixing bowl, toss the sweet potato, bell pepper, zucchini, and onion with the harissa mixture until evenly coated.
  4. SPREAD: Spread the vegetables in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  5. ROAST: Roast for 25-30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the vegetables are tender and slightly caramelized.

Optional: Squeeze some lemon juice over the vegetables before serving for a fresh, zesty flavor.

This dish pairs wonderfully with rice, quinoa, or as a side to grilled meats!
