As part of our commitment to protecting and preserving the beauty of Sag Harbor for future generations, the John Jermain Memorial Library has formed a sustainability team and is actively working on our Sustainable Libraries Initiative Certification.
To meet our goal of increasing our overall sustainability and earning our SLI certification, the library has taken various steps to help foster a more sustainable community:
- Collecting and recycling plastic bags, e-waste, and printer toner cartridges,
- A Seed Library available to all members of the community year-round,
- Landscaping consists of “no-mow” native plantings and pollinator garden,
- All lights inside of the building replaced with LED fixtures (completed Summer 2024),
- Audits of the library’s energy usage and waste output (expected Fall/Winter 2024),
We also are proud to accept food donations for our local food pantry; a list of most needed items is available at the library or can be downloaded here as a PDF.
In the near future, we will be undergoing internal changes such as updating our purchasing policies to better support sustainability, eco-literacy training for staff members, determining the size of JJML’s carbon footprint, and more.
