iPads? Yes

While JJML has long had computers available on which children can play games and work with educational software, since moving to our temporary location at 34 West Water Street (a/k/a Long Island Ave.), we’ve had to cut the number of children’s computer in half because we just don’t have the space to house any more. At the same time, we’ve noticed that a large part of the most exciting developments in computer applications for children have taken place on tablet computing devices.

And so, it occurred to us that the logical thing to do was to introduce  iPads to the children’s department at JJML. So, a few weeks ago we picked up a couple of the latest model iPads from our friends at GeekHampton, loaded them up with apps suitable for children between 2 and 11 years of age, and made them available to borrow from the children’s desk.

The iPads may only be used within the library building, and must be checked out to an adult (18+) holder of a current John Jermain Library card. As noted above, the installed apps will mainly be of interest to children under 12, but older children may also use the iPads if they wish. With 15-20 apps apiece, the devices offer plenty of choices for entertainment and/or education. If they prove popular (which we have no doubt they will), we will add more apps, and possibly even more  tablets.

Have a suggestion for an app you would like to see on our iPads?  Want to see iPads or other tablets used for other purposes at JJML?  Tell us in the comments.
