Hello and Happy Fall! This quarter’s Archives column is showcasing the *new* and innovative equipment setup that we had the great fortune of acquiring through the beneficence of a long-time supporter of JJML, Pace Barnes. We are grateful for her continued generous support. The new setup allows us to digitize items in the JJML Archives that are either too big or too fragile for the flatbed scanner. A few examples of this are: ledgers, newspapers, maps, larger photographs, and scrapbooks. The mirrorless camera shoots down while the archival lights are positioned, as needed, to illuminate the item in order to create the best possible image for perpetuity. The item may go under the glass, on a book cradle, lay flat, or sit delicately on the supportive surface – whatever is needed to best look after the item while photographing it. Since acquiring this new technology, several patrons have donated their family photos and other items to be digitized this way and kept in the JJML Local History Archives Center. We look forward to sharing more of the unique scans, in the future!
Caring for the legacies of Sag Harbor is our earnest pleasure and solemn honor. Please consider donating your family’s photographs, history, and stories to the Local Archives here at JJML.
