Record Your Sag Harbor Story

As part of the Sag Harbor Cultural Distict’s first Cultural Heritage Day in 2016, the library set up a recording studio to record “oral histories” of anyone with a Sag Harbor story to tell. This effort, which was inspired by StoryCorps® as heard on NPR, was revived for the third installment of the Cultural District’s program, now called Cultural Heritage Weekend. JJML now plans to continue recording “sag harbor stories” on an ongoing basis by appointment.

People of all ages are encouraged to sign up for a recording session with a friend who will “interview” you to bring out the details of your story. Your story can be about your life in Sag Harbor, events in the town’s history that you witnessed or took part in, or any other story you would like to see preserved and made available to the public. Recordings will become a part of the library’s permanent local history collection and will be made available for streaming on the library’s website.

Recording your story can take from 45 to 90 minutes. You must come with a relative or friend to conduct the interview. Library staff record, but do not participate in the interview process. Tip sheets on preparing for your recording session, interview techniques and story topic suggestions are available at the library.
