One for the Books! 2018

By popular demand our annual One for the Books! fundraisers return on Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5. Seven cocktail parties, seven generous hosts, and seven special guests will make this annual event a weekend to remember.

Discussion: The short short story as genre, with examples from Kafka to Kawabata

The New York Times named The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel one of the 10 best books of 2006. Amy Hempel is a recent inductee to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Guggenheim Fellow.

Melissa Bank is the author of The Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing and The Wonder Spot. She received the Nelson Algren Award for short fiction from the Chicago Tribune.

Book Discussion: Leaving China by James McMullan
Kate and Jim McMullan are the author/illustrator team behind the picture book series I STINK! Kate has written more than 100 books for children. Jim, most known for his Lincoln Center Theater posters, creates images for books, murals and animated films.

Book Discussion: Man of the Hour: James B. Conant, Warrior Scientist by Jennet Conant
Jennet Conant’s Man of the Hour is a well researched and insightful biography of her grandfather, James Conant, who was a shaping force in 20th century science, education and politics. She is also the author of The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington and Tuxedo Park: A Wall Street Tycoon and the Secret Palace of Science That Changed the Course of World War II, and has written for Vanity Fair, Esquire, GQ, Newsweek, and The New York Times. She lives in New York City and Sag Harbor.
