Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions and struggles of African Americans throughout history.  It originated from the efforts of Carter G. Woodson, a black historian, who established Negro History Week in 1926, which later expanded into a month-long celebration in 1976.  The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederik Douglass.

In the words of Barack Obama, Black History Month “…(is) about the lived, shared experience of all African Americans, high and low, famous and obscure, and how those experiences have shaped and challenged and ultimately strengthened America.”

The library offers an extensive collection of books that celebrate the rich and diverse history of African Americans.   We encourage patrons to visit the library and check out these valuable resources.
