On-Site: Book & Author Event – Pandora’s Toolbox: The Hopes and Hazards of Climate Intervention
August 7, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

For adults
Wake Smith is a lecturer at Yale University and a senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. His most recent book, about which he will speak, is Pandora’s Toolbox: The Hopes and Hazards of Climate Intervention. This book is an accessible introduction into the promise and perils of climate intervention, which refers to all the other things we may need to do to ensure an acceptable future climate besides reaching Net Zero Emissions. These include both carbon capture and storage, which is likely feasible but extremely expensive, and solar geo-engineering, by which we might deflect a small fraction of incoming sunlight and thereby countervail global warming. These controversial technologies don’t replace the need for Net Zero, but our great grandchildren may have no choice but to pursue them if our pathway to Net Zero proves too slow.
This program will take place in the lower-level program room. Light refreshments will be served.
