Chai spice, also known as masala chai spice, refers to a blend of spices commonly used in Indian chai (tea) and other flavorful dishes. The word “chai” means tea in Hindi, and “masala” means spice blend. The spices used in chai spice can vary, but the most common ones include cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, black pepper and nutmeg.
Some variations may also include star anise, fennel seeds, or allspice. These spices are traditionally used to flavor the tea, but chai spice blends are also used in baking, cooking, or to make chai lattes (a popular drink that combines spiced tea with milk). The blend is both aromatic and flavorful, giving a comforting, warm profile to whatever it’s added to.
