Become a volunteer tutor for Literacy Suffolk

Are you passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of others?  Suffolk County  has a pressing need for volunteers who can assist adults in improving their English Language skills.  By becoming a volunteer with Literacy Suffolk, you can help adults improve their English speaking, reading and writing skills.

Volunteers must be over 18 years of age, a high school graduate and able to volunteer at least 2 hours a week for a year.  Tutors and students meet at a local library at a mutually convenient time.

Training for tutors consists of four in-person live sessions that tutors can attend either in person or remotely.  This program trains tutors to work only with our English Language Learners (ELL), or non-native English speakers.  The next in-person training begins on September 26th with additional sessions on September 28th, October 3rd and October 5th,  and will take place at Middle Country Public Library.

An online program that tutors complete at their own pace is also available.  This program trains tutors to work with ELL, as well as Basic Literacy Learners (BLL), or native English speakers.
