The websites listed below offer free downloadable e-Books that are DRM free and readable on a wide variety of e-readers. Not all e-readers support all formats of e-Books. Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg offers over 38,000 free ebooks: choose among free epub books, free kindle books, download them or read them online. The site carries high quality e-books: All were previously published by bona fide publishers. They digitize and diligently proofread them with the help of thousands of volunteers. No fee or registration is required, however donations are accepted to enable them to continue their work. Project Gutenberg e-books are free in the United States because their copyright has expired. They may not be free of copyright in other countries. Readers outside of the United States must check the copyright laws of their countries before downloading or redistributing our e-books.

Free-eBooks.net is maintained by a group of bibliophiles. Their mission is to promote literacy and share their author's messages with the world. They aim to accomplish this by providing quality services and free access to e-Books for everyone. They bill the site as "the internet's #1 online source for free ebook downloads, ebook resources and ebook authors." offering the opportunity to "discover all-new, rising authors -- independent writers offering both entertaining fiction/romance for your enjoyment and non-fiction to help you find info from self-help to biz growth."

GetFreeEbooks.com

GetFreeEbooks.com, is a site that brings both authors and readers into the world of free ebooks. It's objective is to create a central hub / directory of free legal ebooks from various genres and categories, not limited to hosting them, but to link, providing resources and other useful information for both authors and readers, anything closely related to ebooks. "Convenience and top notch content is our priority."

ManyBooks.net

There are more than 29,000 free e-Books available for Kindle, Nook, iPad and most other eReaders. Browse through the most popular titles, recommendations, or recent reviews from visitors. Most, but not all books on this site come from the Project Gutenberg (see above) archives.

The Online Books Page

Listing over 1 million free books on the Web. Edited by John Mark Ockerbloom, and hosted at the University of Pennsylvannia. Many of these books are downloadable, others are only readable on computer or table screens while connected to the internet. This site does not "host" (store) these books, it only provides links to other sites that house the actual books. Howver, the index on this site is searchable by author or title, and the books can also be browsed by subject.

Smashwords

Discover Great e-books from indie authors and publishers. Smashwords is an e-book publishing and distribution platform for ebook authors, publishers, agents and readers. They offer both free and purchaseable multi-format, DRM-free e-books, ready for immediate downloading. The e-books are readable on any e-reading device. For readers, Smashwords provides an opportunity to discover new voices in all categories and genres of the written word. Once you register, the site offers useful tools for search, discovery and personal library-building.

KoboBooks

This is a commercail site which also boasts the availability of over one million free e-books. Many are from Project Gutenberg (see above). Free registration is required.

The Internet Archive

The Open Library

The Internet Archive Text Archive contains a wide range of fiction, popular books, children's books, historical texts and academic books some of which can be downloaded. Others can only be read online.

The Internet Archive's Open Library project is an open, editable library catalog, building towards a web page for every book ever published. Links to borrow or purchase e-books are included on many pages. (Registration required.)

Google Books

Inkmesh

This search engine mkes it easier to find e-books and compare e-book prices for the Kindle, iPhone/Pad, Sony Reader, Nook and other devices. Searching only free e-books is possible; limiting to just Sony, Kobo, Kindle, Smashwords, Nook, and Baen books is also an option. Each record indicates the devices that are compatible with it. Searching by subject allows for narrowing by free, price or device. Inkmesh includes more than 3,500 promotiona e-books that appear to be lesser-known authors of fiction and non-fiction titles including self-help, religion, business, science/nature, romance science fiction/fantasy, and literature. browsing subjects is also an option.

Munseys

Offering 20,000 titles in twelve formats, Munseys explicitly identifies proper choices for Kindles, Nooks, and Sony Readers. Titles can be found by searching author, title, or tags, and browsing is available in thirty-nine different categories. Munseys has many titles found in other services listed here; however, some of its categories offer distinctive titles. Tip: when donwloading a title, first click "Select One" to choose the desired format, then click "download."

Foboko

Download or create ebooks in a social environment. Break away from typical bestsellers to discover independent & aspiring authors sharing their stories and wisdom. Readers can register free or as a VIPs (for a fee), then browse the library and download the books they want. Authors can start writing a book using Foboko's free wizard, get feedback from friends or the Foboko community, and publish on the site. Readers and authors can form groups to discuss their favorite books or collaborate on new ones. Fobuko allows readers to interact directly with their favorite authors, and authors with their fans.
