The Ghost Bride, by Yangsze Choo

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo

The Ghost Bride is set in Malaya, a British occupied trading town.  Lin Lan is the only daughter in a Chinese family that is experiencing the misfortune of a declining business and growing debt.  She has few prospects for marriage and the rich Lim family is offering her a marriage to their deceased son, as a ghost bride.  He begins haunting her dreams, leading her on a supernatural quest to unravel the secrets that have been hidden by his family.  Before reading the story, I expected a more in-depth and detailed historical viewpoint about Chinese customs.  Instead, the story unexpectedly focused more on the religious and superstitious, exploring the realms of the afterlife.  The Ghost Bride had the tone of a fantasy more than historical fiction.
